“Fatima, can I please wash your hair using Fairy?”

Boredom… What a pleasant feeling. But as pleasant as it is, I didn’t really experience it when I was younger. You see, when you have a brother called Yousuf, another one called Bassam and cousins like mine you’ll never have time for that kind of thing. I can sit all day and explain why that is but I think sharing this story would be more than enough.

It all started when my brother Yousuf gave me his signature sinister smile and asked me this question, “Fatima.. er.. Is it okay if I shampoo your hair using Fairy?” Me, being the obedient 5 year old little sister I was, replied with an innocent smile “Sure, why not?” He then took me by the hand and headed to the bathroom sink, tipped my head back and started shampooing my hair with the dishwashing soap.  My brother Bassam came into the bathroom and saw Yousuf following the instructions you’d find in an actual shampoo bottle: rinse, lather and yes, repeat. He did not try to stop Yousuf because he really didn’t see anything wrong with the scenario. Instead, he just stood there watching Yousuf act like a barber and me being tortured. I say tortured because while Yousuf was having fun playing barber I was silently crying. My eyes were stinging me because the soap had gone into them. After a couple of minutes my dear brothers realized I was crying and immediately rinsed all the Fairy soap out of my hair fearing I had lost my sight.

Yousuf and I went back to our normal everyday activities but Bassam had other plans in mind. He kept playing with his car in front of my parents’ room waiting for one of them to come out. When my father finally came out Bassam cried (cried as in crying with actual tears not cried as in shouted), “BABAAAA! Fatima is blind!”

I never really knew what happened next but I do vaguely remember going to the emergency room. Anyway, I’m sure by now you got my not-having-time-for-boredom point.

Yousuf

See the sinister smile?

TTFN.
